Northern Lights Cruises 2024-2026 Seasons

northern lights norway cruise

Every year, millions of tourists flock to the Arctic for a chance to witness the phenomenon of the Northern Lights. By night you will seek out the Northern Lights, but by day we will try to get you off the ship 2-3 times per day (depending on the weather and conditions) so you can get the most out of your time in the Arctic. Walking and bird-watching are popular activities as they offer a chance to witness the unique wildlife in the destinations you visit. There is no best place to witness an aurora which, in our opinion, only adds to the mystery and appeal surrounding them. This is why Aurora Expeditions’ Northern Lights tours don’t focus on one spot or location. The Northern Lights are most frequently visible in high-latitude regions in the Arctic, but most accessible between 10° and 20° of the North Pole in a band called the ‘auroral zone’.

We knew we wanted to visit Norway for our honeymoon but were overwhelmed with planning the trip on our own. Our trip was the perfect amount of planned activities and downtime/time to explore at our leisure. Travelling around Norway was a breeze with the help of Nordic Visitor and we cannot recommend the tours Nordic Visitor has to offer enough. All hotels had great breakfast buffets and were all centrally located in the areas we were visiting.

Nordic Visitor can assist in your trip planning and tailor a tour package to your interests. Keep browsing below for our suggestions of tour packages that include northern lights cruises in Norway. Hurtigruten is the king of Norway cruises, with at least one ship departing daily on its coastal route (the line is based in Norway). Most major cruise lines and many expedition lines also visit Norway; the notable exceptions are Carnival and Norwegian Cruise Line. You might find a Disney cruise to Norway (sometimes including Iceland), though they are few and far between.

Guest speakers, astronomers and award-winning photographers are usually on board to join guests on deck to each evening to scan for and enjoy the northern lights show. Bring an alarm clock. Many cruise ships enter the beautiful Geirangerfjord early in the morning. It's worth setting an alarm and getting up early to watch the ship sail in. While you'll retrace your steps at the end of the day, often with a slowdown by the famous falls, the light will be more photo-friendly in the morning, and fewer people will block your view.

Our Northern Lights cruises

The optimal time to witness the Northern Lights during Aurora Expeditions’ cruises and expeditions is typically during the winter months when the polar night prevails. This period, from late September to early April, offers extended darkness and clearer skies, enhancing the visibility of the Aurora Borealis. The absence of sunlight allows passengers to fully immerse themselves in the captivating light displays against the Arctic or sub-Arctic landscapes. Aurora Expeditions carefully schedules these voyages to coincide with peak Northern Lights activity, ensuring passengers have the best chances of experiencing this celestial spectacle in its full splendour. Specializing in polar voyages, Quark Expeditions knows a thing or two about the northern lights, which is why the company offers aurora sailings each fall.

Northern Lights Tours in Tromso

Norwegian Travel is a premium brand aiming to offer high-quality experience-based tourism in selected unique destinations in Norway. We wish to inspire people to explore the treasures to be found in Norway. At our destinations you can explore amazing nature, good food and exciting activities all year round.

When the northern lights do appear, "more than likely the ship will turn off most of the exterior lights," Weber says. "But you can prepare as soon as you board the ship by scouting out the darkest spot outside, and up top on the ship." That may be away from the ship stairways and public rooms. Seeing the northern lights on a cruise isn’t guaranteed (although at least one cruise line, Hurtigruten, does issue a guarantee for certain cruises. See below).

The cruise company we use seriously aims to protect the Norwegian coast and is a world leader in sustainable cruising. The direction you cruise off in will all depend on the Aurora forecast and the weather predictions of the current day. The Aurora forecast can help predict when the Northern Lights will appear next and if you are interested, you can check out the Northern Lights predictions yourself on a website or download an app to your phone. This way you see the chances of the lights occuring at the time of your visit. Embark on a nostalgic voyage of the largest island in the Svalbard archipelago to experience a remote wilderness of fjords, glaciers, and polar wildlife. Havila Voyages calls at 34 ports most never visited by commercial cruise liners, the ships deliver freight, post and passengers to remote communities, some of which are home to just a few hundred people.

Cross the Arctic Circle, with arrival in the beautifully located town of Bodø. The town is surrounded by spectacular alpine mountain peaks and islands. On the outside decks you can enjoy an unobstructed view of the night sky, while listening to the knowledgeable English-speaking guide tell you all you need to know about the Northern Lights. Itinerary and shore excursions are subject to change and may vary by departure.

These 14-day itineraries cruise from Iceland to Greenland and back from September into early October. And if they don't show, well, you still get to explore Iceland's Westfjords and Greenland's eastern shores — and that's a worthwhile journey in itself. Each fall, one or two of the ships in Cunard's legendary fleet head north for Norway, where guests are treated to scenic cruising along the coast. The 12-day itineraries depart from Southampton, England, before traveling to Alesund, Tromsø, Narvik, and Haugesund, sailing through majestic fjords along the way. Since the ships sail this itinerary from October to November, the skies will be dark enough to see the northern lights, should they decide to appear.

To ensure the highest quality for our guests, we maintain close connections with them and try their cruise services ourselves.

We thank you for flawless instructions and all useful information which made our trip a convenient one as well. We are glad that we have chosen Nordic Visitor for this trip and surely will recommend to our friends and family. See what Nordic Visitor travellers said about their experience with us. Try local foods in Norway's ports. You don't have to have big meals out to sample Norway's unique foods. Fish markets in many ports sell more than just fish, and you can get samples of elk, reindeer and whale from the vendors.

There are so many treasures awaiting discovery in this magical region. Let us introduce you to the mysteries of the aurora borealis, the beautiful Lofoten Islands, and how our on board spa services take inspiration from the ocean itself. Rebuilt after a fire in 1904, Alesund is uniquely art nouveau in style (something of a rarity in Norway). It’s spread across a series of islands, best seen from the city’s famous Fjellstua viewpoint. We have the answers so your first  time will be nothing but smooth sailing. Stay, sleep and dine in our new, modern ships in surroundings that are inspired by the natural wonders that we sail past.

To help you, we asked photography experts for their tried and trusted tips on everything from how to photograph the Northern Lights from a ship to shooting the aurora with a smartphone. Long before we understood the science behind the aurora, the Northern Lights were wrapped up in myths and legends that still fuel our imaginations today. They also said that a deeper understanding of the science only adds to the magic of the experience of seeing the Northern Lights. Being at sea avoids the air pollution and the ambient light on land, both of which can dull the colors and vibrancy of a Northern Lights spectacle. There’s more than one way to sail with us and discover the many wonders of the Norwegian coast.

That’s why we’ve launched Sea Zero – a first-of-its-kind initiative to develop the world’s most energy-efficient cruise ship. For those who have your heart set on witnessing the swirling glow of the aurora borealis, we make you a promise no one can match. Relive pioneering adventures on a magical sailing along the Norwegian coast and up to the edge of the world. The sun does not appear above the horizon in Tromso & Kirkenes from late November to mid January, but it is not dark all day. You can experience the magic, blue Arctic twilight during the day time, while the spectacular Northern Lights may show at the dark sky in the evening. Our crew will announce occurrences of the aurora to your cabin or suite at any time of the day or night.

Our ships sail the Norwegian coast, above the Arctic Circle at 66°N, and directly beneath the Auroral Oval, an area of consistently active displays. Book confidently with our Northern Lights Promise – get a free trip if the lights don't appear on select voyages (Ts&Cs apply). Embark on a nostalgic summertime voyage along the Norwegian coast up to the Svalbard archipelago at the edge of the world.
